Women in the Waves

Writing Workshops for Women, Based in Austin, Texas

Comments on the Workshop from Past Participants

—I earned a Bachelor's degree in Creative Writing and have participated in several different workshops at a variety of academic institutions, and I have found Sherry's to be the most helpful as far as my development as a writer. The combination of teaching strategies she uses was far more practically helpful to me than a basic workshop wherein individual pieces of writing are read and criticized. Never before has my development as a writer on a larger scale been addressed

—I took Sherry's classes to broaden my mind and my further education in an informal setting. My reading experience is so much more deeply pleasurable since studying with Sherry. I also enjoyed the luxury of getting to know the diverse and fascinating people these classes attract. Above all, I would stress that these classes are fun! I took them when I found out I would not have time to go on a summer vacation, but I got my vacation anyway. Entering Sherry's world of writing is like entering a sort of Tahiti of the mind.

—Sherry has helped me move past a pugnacious writing block by sharing her best wisdom and many good times. I owe what acumen got me into one of the best programs in creative writing in the country to her insistence again and again that I am what I love and lack. She has been inestimably important in sheltering my voice and bolstering my thoughts about writing.... I want to give my highest recommendation to Sherry: her teaching has been invaluable.

—Sherry finds a way to reach and inspire everyone, no matter the level of experience. Her teaching method is exceptional and effective.

—The way Sherry talks about it "good writing is partly a telling and partly a becoming." She stresses both aspects about equally and intermarries them in fascinating ways that make me want to move further along the character arc, not just move my characters along it.

—Sherry is a powerful and profoundly playful teacher. I don't think I'll forget her gifts to me or her insistence that "I find a language I can believe in, one in which there is an opportunity to hear something that is not merely comfortably familiar, not merely reinforcing of my own prejudices and assumptions."

—Sherry's passion for literature and for the process of writing is absolutely contagious. She understands the impulses and motivations of writers, and is very resourceful and imaginative about helping writers break through their blocks to creativity.

—I feel more present for my life since taking Sherry's classes and more able to make living moments in the world of my work.
